“How Vast the Sum of His Thoughts”

I’ve missed seeing you over the past couple of weeks!  Thank you for your calls and cards of encouragement!  I’m feeling better each day.

I’ve been mindful of some wonderful truths found in Psalm 139.  Verse 13, “For you formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb…” Verse 16 “Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in your book were all written the days that were ordained for me when as yet there was not one of them.”

What a tremendous comfort to know that our omniscient, omnipresent, and sovereign God is intimately acquainted with each one of us!  To be sure, He knows all people this way.  And, outside of Christ this would be a frightening prospect!  But for believers the opposite is true.  In Christ, we who were once enemies of God have been “brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13).  We have been “justified by faith”.  For us “there is therefore now no condemnation”, and we truly “have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:1, 8:1).  The result is full reconciliation to a loving heavenly Father (Gal. 4:4-6).  The Apostle John was thrilled to remind us of this in 1 John 3:1, “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are!”

This is the God of Psalm 139.  He knows each of us this way.   He is my ever-present, omniscient, omnipresent, sovereign, loving Father.   He has ordained all my days, including these days of trial.  He knew my days of unformed substance, He has written my final earthly day, and He has chosen me for eternal days of glory (Eph. 1:4).  He knows me far better than I know myself, and when my health is fading and my strength is gone – I’m in His hands.  What can we do but rest in Him, praise Him, and cherish His knowledge of us? “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!  How vast is the sum of them!  If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand.  When I awake, I am still with you.”  (Ps. 139:17-18)

Would you take time to praise God with me this week for His loving presence in our lives?  He is certainly worthy!

Thanks!  See you Sunday…
